A set of three chew balls for cats and small-to-medium dogs, each hand-braided from a different plant: seagrass, corn husk, and cattail reed. No dye, no glue, nothing synthetic.
Sized for cats and dogs, not hamsters. Most woven balls on the market are made for small rodent cages, an inch or two across. Ours run 6.5–7cm, big enough for a cat to bat around the floor or a small-to-medium dog to actually chew on, not disappear inside their mouth.
We're a small cooperative in Wildbrook Village, a Tujia mountain community in the Qing River valley of Enshi, Hubei. The seagrass and cattail come from the water's edge near the village; the corn husk is left over from the corn harvest. A few of the village women weave these by hand the way baskets and mats have been woven here for generations. No two balls come out exactly the same.
Why three fibers instead of one? Every pet has a favorite, so this set lets you find it:
- Seagrass — a water grass gathered from the riverbank near our village, firmer weave, good resistance for enthusiastic chewers
- Corn husk — softer and lighter, nice for cats or gentle batting
- Cattail — reed fiber, holds up to rougher play
What's in the box:
Seagrass, ~6.5cm / 30g
Corn husk, ~6.5–7cm / 25g
Cattail, ~7cm / 35g
These are safe to chew. The fiber has a mild flossing effect on teeth and gums, and if a little gets swallowed it's plant matter, not plastic or rubber. Still, watch your pet while they play, like with any chew toy, and swap it out once it's worn down.
Compostable when they're done. No packaging waste.
